Spring Involvement Fair

The Spring Involvement Fair was on Wednesday, January 25 from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. in the University Center. The organizations that I stopped by were the Community Civic Engagement (CCE), Student Government Association (SGA), and Relay For Life and the reason why I stopped by these three organizations was the fact that they offer a great opportunity to help out the community and helps us as college students see what all is out there for us at any time and at any place.
Community Civic Engagement (CCE) is a department of the Division of Student Affairsthat supports the university mission to develop “responsible citizenship” through education opportunities and provide “service” to our neighboring communities. They provide opportunities for us college students to recognize their civic potential and take initiative to develop it. Students enrich and enhance their education experience through active, engaged service. The Office for Community & Civic Engagement engages student volunteers and community organizations to meet the needs of the community through service. They don’t have no meeting times since it’s an organization you can just go when you feel like helping out the community. They have many events going on all the time. Every week there is at least four if not more to go volunteer at. So far their major event this semester has been MLK Day of Service. Their upcoming event for next week will be Jan. 31 Teen Life Program Kick-Off: The Pembroke Housing Authority is partnering with CCE to start a Teen Life Program. The Kick-Off will be to introduce the program to the teens and their families, as well as a chance to mingle with mentors. In which from this there will be programs held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Pembroke Housing Authority. Different activities will be held for teens that participate in the Teen Life Program. Mentors will be needed. Members from this organization where enabling others to act by giving some time of their busy schedules to explain what they offer.
Student Government Association (SGA): The purpose of the Student Government Association (SGA) is to represent and safeguard interest of the students. It is basically a political organization providing students with an avenue for action matters pertaining to student rights and welfare. Although discipline is the legal responsibility of the administration, the principle of student government is fully supported by the administration and faculty. They meeting every Wednesday at 5:15pm in the University Center, Room 213. There major event so far in this semester was a ASG convention that took place here at UNC-P after five years and there next event will be another ASG convention that will be at the end of February at UNCC. Members from this organization where enabling others to act by giving some time of their busy schedules to explain what they offer.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out on campus and take turns walking or running around the track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. Their major event for this semester will be the 2012 Relay For Life of UNC- Pembroke will take place on April 13, 2012 1:00 pm. It’s only $10 to register and it’s for a great cause. Members from this organization where enabling others to act by giving some time of their busy schedules to explain what they offer.
My plans for involvement this semester is to go to these three organizations and see how I can make a difference in our community. I know that by taking some time to go to these places I’m already a step ahead but I need to know how I can make a difference and how I can put forth all that I’m capable of doing.
One Word Resolution.

FORGIVE
How? I chose this because I know my huge ego/pride doesn’t let me forgive.
Why? Many say that why forgive just move on and forget. Just because I don’t forgive doesn’t mean I don’t move on I do but to a certain point. I can not forgive someone that easy with a simple sorry or even if they show me they’re sorry. It’s not because I simply like being begged. No it’s that I just believe why forgive when something is done is done if it hurt you for whatever reason or if it affected you with a certain success in life then simply just keep on. I accept I have a huge pride and when I say something no going back but I know I need to change that because I hurt others and although I say it don’t affect me in a way it does. I don’t like seeing others hurt because of my own fault so I have to let some pride go and forgive.
SMART Goal Reflection

I’ve been part of the Leadership Living Learning Community (LLC) a year and a half ago. I have gained a lot from it and has helped me in many ways. It has really helped me with becoming more involved in my community, on campus, and I have became a lot more out spoken since I stepped into UNC-P. Being part of this community has really made me see what all I’m capable of. That staying quiet not speaking what you want to see changed will never get you where you plan to be. It has really been a great experience.
Personally my smart goals for the fall semester wasn’t good at all. I didn’t achieve them like I would of liked to. My first goal was to reach a 3.5 GPA by the end of the Spring Semester, but even though we just started the Spring Semester I know it will not be that easy to reach being that my second smart goal was to reach a 3.2 GPA by the end of the Fall Semester by doing that it would be more realistic and attainable to reach my first smart goal. I know that they were specific and measurable but I know my main downfall in not reaching it was not using my time the correct way. I know I’m capable of doing anything I commit myself to but it will definitely take a lot of effort and work in order to do so.
Now I will have to start thinking about my Spring Semester smart goals and will actually try to make them more realistic and attainable but most important I will have to be more specific and be more timely with them.
Working on being focused!

This year I became more involved on campus by committing myself in another organization besides LLC which has really been a little struggle. Last year I was a lot more focused and definitely time wasn’t an issue for me. But this year I’ve came to realize it can be so much challenging to commit yourself to more things. It’s always good to stay active and feel like one is accomplishing goals but it can become really exhausting. Being focused is one of my strengths so I have to stay on top of it and not slack off on it. Even though we might plan our day we know there will always be something that comes in the way which puts us back a step but we can’t let that get to us. So this week I have I have been doing pretty good with two main commitments that I been working on since last week.
My first and most important commitment is making sure I follow through my to-do list since I wake up until it’s time to go to bed and be prepared for the next day. I been having a to-do list since the beginning of the semester but being involved, having to attend events, and tutoring sessions made me fall down and leave that to-do list behind. So I decided to make sure I started working on it again and actually do everything that I wrote down. I started by making sure I had my priorities before anything else before I put myself in practice. So far been doing pretty good with my to-do list.
Second commitment which I also started at the beginning of the semester was becoming fit. Going every night to the gym and work out. Being my second year I’ve learned that the best way to stay fit is working out. Being in college sometimes you don’t eat a healthy meal because of the fact there is always a lot going on which is never good. Being healthy in college is very important many might not see it as that and might think I just worry about losing weight but being fit motivates ourselves in a way of becoming better with our thinking process and will not feel lazy when we know it’s good for us. So my suite mate and I decided to commit ourselves into going to the gym every night. So far doing good.
Having a lot to do, trying to stay focused, and stay in fit can become kind of challenging but we know we can do it and is the best way to improve ourselves mentally and physically.
Dinner with Chancellor: Mr. Carter

Last Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011 will be another great memorable experience for me here at UNCP. For the second time I have the opportunity to have dinner with the Chancellor Mr Carter and his wife Mrs. Carter. Being part of the Leadership Living Learning Community(LLC) is a great opportunity to expand our horizons here at UNCP. Many don’t know the great opportunities we are given by being part of this community. It’s not only just about how to become better leaders on campus and for ourselves that’s the main role for this but just as we have responsibilities we are also given this great advantage over other students on campus to socialize personally with the Chancellor by being invited for Dinner at his house. We all were invited over. Since it’s 60 of us a pretty big crowd we had dinner in the backyard where we all socialize and spent a good afternoon.
That afternoon we all gathered at the Student Leadership Involvement office. Arrived at the Chancellor’s house where we were received and greeted by Mr. Carter and Mrs. Carter. We
went through the serving line and went to the backyard and sat with our friends. Mr. Carter and Mrs. Carter sat at tables that had vacant seats and socialized with everyone. Unfortunately, our table was full so we didn’t have neither of the two at my table. But we did have Dale Carder come to our table and asked us questions about UNCP. His first question for us was “Why did you choose to come UNCP? My response along with the rest was class sizes. At first I didn’t know who he was besides his name since when he introduced himself. We came to find out he was the brander for our school. He’s second question was “What makes us different from other campus?” We all agreed that the diversity on this campus is the main noticeable thing that makes UNCP different from other campus in NC.
I didn’t have the opportunity to talk personally with Mr. Carter and Mrs. Carter but one thing that really inspired me was his response to a question that was asked by one of the members in the LLC. The question was “What would he like to see changed here at UNCP?” He responded that he would like to see all of us graduate in four years, to be crossing that bridge in 2014 or 2015 but graduation rate to be changed.
Having this opportunity once again dinner with the Chancellor makes me value the opportunity given to be in the LLC because we sure have more advantages than others on campus.

Being part of the Leadership Living Learning Community (LLC) we are required to join another organization on campus. There are several organizations on campus that one can join but the one that capture my attention since last year was ACE which is Association for Campus Entertainment. ACE is the organization that is in charge of bringing all the fun things on campus. They keep us students entertained all week long. They have different events going on almost every single day of the week. Some of the things they host are movie nights which includes free drinks and popcorn, bring comedians, dances, they also have off campus trips, and give free tickets for important games.
I really enjoy being part of this organization being that most of the members have good leading ideas that lead everyone else to become more involved and keep leading ACE into a better organization. ACE is being a great influence with the LLC program modeling the way into us wanting to become more known even though it is two different ideas in each organization the serve the same purpose leadership and involvement. Another practice of leadership that I noticed ACE does is enabling others to a. This being said is seen that ACE is one of the biggest organizations on campus because of all those out there being part of this organization. It wouldn’t be where it is now if it was just given to the main leaders but instead it shows it takes partners to get extraordinary things done in it. Also, I know ACE by having certain members that make the organization more known with their ideas and creativity had a nice inspiring a shared vision on me because by them doing so they made me feel part of the organization and why it is good to be part of it.
My five strengths were Futuristic, Empathy, Focus, Strategic, and Includer. My five strengths can give good outcomes to this ACE if I used them in this organization. Futuristic, I’m always thinking of the future because mistakes that we can make right now in the organization can haunt us in the future so we always need to make sure we are giving the best out of this organization. I sense the feeling of the executive board because being in charge is not always easy so we need to try to help in order if we want ACE to keep going. Staying focus can be used a lot at our Monday meetings. If we would concentrate instead of talking and going of track we would be able to get all that is down on the agenda done and not have to rush through it. Having and creating other way to proceed in ACE has been seen a lot because they always come up with a plan b if anything goes wrong unexpectedly. ACE has enough positivity with including everyone. By taking any ideas or suggestions from anyone who would like to throw out any specific event they would like to see and actually try to make it happen.
Being part of ACE has really brought me new experiences by being more involved on campus, becoming more social, and knowing more people on campus.
Model the Way

Model the Way-
Personally in my opinion Model the Way means to set an example, be an example, and being able to know what you’re values or aspirations are. But you can not Model the Way by just saying this. One has to take action, show it, prove it, and be willing to stand up for what we believe is the correct way to set a good example. We must have clarity in our values first of all. If we don’t have our values and aspirations clear then how do we expect to be able to express ourselves as a good model. In order to become leaders and be able to model the way we must be persons with strong beliefs about matters of principle meaning have beliefs with things that actually matter. Also, we must know that we should never doubt instead have a steady determination when making commitments to a clear set of values. Last but not least overall in order to be able to Model the way we all must have one thing clear we admire most those who believe strongly in something and who are willing to stand up for their beliefs so we must know and have this clear if we want to be a leaders setting a good example and modeling the way.
How can we Model the Way of an Ideal Community? Five things the LLC can take are:
- First of all and most important of all we need to be the LEADERS on campus like we are suppose to be in the first place. That’s why we became part of this community to be leaders. Help ourselves succeed in what we have set our mind but also just like we are a community help each other out and show who we are and as we all know we are behind on accomplishing being the leaders on campus it’s never to late to start over and strive to our purpose being the Leaders the campus should have and be the leaders who others want to follow.
- Second of all, we could start making ourselves known on campus as LEADERS and take out that impression that majority of the campus has about the LLC .
- Staying United-We need to stay together as the community we suppose to be not be our small groups we all have created I know myself hasn’t been doing this but it’s never to late to start over and this time do it as a COMMUNITY that we are.
- Another important thing we should take is being able to trust each other and talk if we need. Be mature enough to encounter any situation that comes up, be able to face it and know how to solve it without taking it out of our hands.
- Last not least be ourselves and know what we need to change for our own good and also to change our community the Living Learning Community to its main purpose Leaderhip!!
Personally I’m trying to model the way for the LLC by clearing my mind and setting it on my main goals. Knowing the main purpose of the LLC. Trying to stay positive and voice my opinion. Be someone who is willing to help others on how to become leaders. I can honestly say I haven’t been modeling the way the correct way I should but yet to do so but I’m working on it.
I can improve by becoming more social with the LLC members that I haven’t had much communication with. Become more involved and start encouraging first year students that we still have the opportunity to change the LLC image that has been created as of now. Encourage them how they can have a good first year, that college can be fun but to never forget the reason why we came to it. By doing this I will be modeling the way for first year students with encouragement.
